Arts Council Supports Jazz in the Arts Foundation

Jazz in the Arts Foundation is a non-profit organization under the umbrella of the Arts and Humanities Council of Southwest Louisiana. The foundation is dedicated to providing community-based jazz concerts for family entertainment and presenting jazz music awareness through visual art, dance, and the spoken word. The foundation’s mission is to promote the development and education of jazz music in all its varieties, to create opportunities for children and adults to develop talents in all aspects of jazz entertainment, and to provide support, encouragement, and recognition to the youth of Southwest Louisiana pursuing higher education in jazz studies.

Scholarships are given to students seeking education in jazz music and theory. Concerts featuring jazz artists from Southwest Louisiana and the surrounding areas are given every quarter at the Central School Theatre at Central School Arts & Humanities Center in Lake Charles.

Jazz in the Arts Youth Summer Jazz Workshop begins May 2013!  JITA Youth Summer Jazz Workshop is a hands on performance clinic for aspiring middle and high school jazz musicians.  The workshop will emphasize practical playing experience through a variety of classes, clinics and performance activities for the jazz musician.  All participants will be placed in performance ensembles that stress a combination of reading music, improvising, and collaborative music making.  Participants will leave the program with a greater understanding of harmony, melody, and jazz styles.  Students will have the opportunity to participate in two public jazz concerts with the workshop faculty.
